Season 1: where it all begins. The show introduces Hawkins, the group of friends around Mike, Dustin, Lucas and Will, and the mysterious girl Eleven, whose abilities link her to the government lab on the edge of town. The verdict in short: a big, emotional and mostly satisfying farewell that is held back by pacing and familiar storytelling. It is easy to see why critics were kinder than many fans.
The story. Season 5 has a clear, simple goal: find Vecna and end him. That focus is a strength, because it gives the whole ensemble a shared mission after seasons in which the group was split across towns and storylines. Setting it in a quarantined, rift-scarred Hawkins in 1987 gives the town real stakes, and the looming anniversary of Will’s disappearance gives the season an emotional spine that goes all the way back to the first episode. Where it stumbles is in the middle, where the plot leans heavily on the show’s own lore and several developments feel more complicated than they need to be.
The characters. Having the whole group back together is the season’s biggest pleasure.
